Well, the end of another successful, exciting and fun-filled year is upon us. For my husband and me, this was the most FUN year with the long distance trip to beautiful Estes Park. We finally got to meet the people behind the names of many of our western members - and they were just as terrific in person as online or on the telephone.  We truly are a family - we don’t just talk it, we live it. There are pictures and write-ups of the games and the 2011 AGM on the forum pages at http://clanthompson.org/CTF/.

Our members manned clan tents in Vermont, Connecticut, North Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Florida and Rhode Island. A good showing, but one that will grow as we do. We understand the reluctance of some people to get involved with or support the society - we aren’t yet recognized as a clan by Lord Lyon in Scotland and - to some - that is the all in all of being a clan. Well, we agree on it’s importance .........but, for now, we have proof that we were a clan, were recognized by the Scottish Parliament, and were Border Reivers. Until Lyon Court approval, we are celebrating our ancestry and heritage and have every right to do so. While some games won’t let us attend - either because we aren’t recognized or because other clans have demanded that we not be allowed to ‘infringe’ on their claims to the Thom(p)son surname - we will continue to educate and inform Thoms in every way we can of their place in history and that they should and can celebrate it!

Until we can celebrate our society’s recognition via Lyon, we will continue to welcome new members who have the same hopes and goals as we. We will get there. Remember that the requirements of getting a society recognized (in lieu of having a hereditary chief) are very stringent and require more than just proof of a prior existence. You must also prove that you have been (1) laboring on behalf of your name, (2) be legally incorporated a minimum of three years, (3)include copies of many different documents and handouts to prove you have been promoting the name at games, Scottish gatherings, writings, have members and have held membership meetings with minutes, etc., (4) provide indisputable research that you are not part of another clan, and (5) formally petition the court for recognition.

So......we want to thank you all for your support and enthusiasm. whether you are in the US, South Africa, Australia, Scotland or beyond......... and look forward to an even better 2012!
.........as 2011 ends......
