DNA results
« on: December 04, 2010, 08:13:24 AM »
I finally sent in my Pedigree Chart, so now I can hold my head up.   :)

I recently had an autosomal "Family Finder" test from Familytreedna.  Anyone can take it and it will test both sides of the family up to 6 generations.  I've received 45 names with their surnames and sometimes gedcom files.  There are few Thompson's in their trees, but I have yet to make a connection.  It's like researching backwards.

Is there a category that has surnames, of the Thompson's on this site?  Also, kit numbers might be helpful.  Any other ideas how we can make connections with each other?  Maybe I just don't know where to look.

Hi

No, we do not have a topic on DNA it might help if we did, but then w need the data from non-members to stay current. I suggest we use the Family Tree Thompson project spread sheet as the research source point. Then we ask the Administrator to establish a new topic 'DNA' We could use the new topic for questions and comments and also post our kit numbers so we could compare our markers on the Family Tree Thompson project page.
I hope everyone will comment on this and then we can use the best suggestions for a good addition to our forum.

It looks like the independent Thompson DNA project site http://www.thompsonfamilies.org has been quasi-abandoned. They used ybase as their default database. I did get in touch with them long enough to enter my results, but then never heard back from them. I heard from a person on one of the DNA users groups that the administrators need help. Right now the person in charge is Kathy Borges (spelling?). She's also deeply involved in ISOGG and that takes most of her time. From other posts on the DNA Newbies user group she also seems to be heavily involved in the ideas and technology used in the family finder process (although it's pretty advanced stuff and fairly confusing to me).

Family Tree DNA seems to be the king of the family projects. As someone who tested with Ancestry.com I can say that it's critical to find out what your numbers would be at FTDNA and learn to speak about them in FTDNA's order if you want to be able to converse with others. The only company I see mentioned more on the DNA newbies group is 23 and me. FTDNA has a free database at ysearch.org, but I've heard some complaints that it's records don't get updated when people upgrade to newer tests (like when they move from 37 markers to 68 or whatever). The other drawback is that it is limited to YDNA.

Genetree, Genebase, SMGF, Ybase and Ysearch all allowed me to put in my numbers for free and search their databases. Maybe we could link to all these sites as possible search areas for members with any tips and tricks we've picked up to help in their search?

Genetree, SMGF and Ancestry.com happen to use Sorenson Genomics as their testing company. Ybase is set up by DNAHeritage, Genebase may be a DNAheritage company as well. Genetree and Genebase also feature MTDNA searches.

I think for right now, Family finder is in a class by itself because it looks at more than just Y and mitochondrial DNA and actually checks 22 chromosomes. I'm sure it will be the standard of the future though. I'm not sure what other companies offer autosomal testing.

How about a surname category?  Surnames that are married to Thompson's.  I would like to see the surnames of other members  because it might help me find my missing Thompson.

I found this link elsewhere in the forum: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=clan_thompson

I clicked on a few of the alphabetical links along the top of the results and they appear to be spouses plus. Of course T contains the Thompsons. I'm not sure if this is the current database.

Hi Guys -

Yep, that's the clan members' submitted genealogy. It SHOULD be much larger, but for some reason we have trouble getting people to send in their family info! Now you know why we really want them to send them - it could help so many find their missing ancestors!

Good idea on links for some of the other DNA sites, Mike.  I'll see if I can track them down and put them in the LINKS section of the website.  Do you have a copy of your DNA?  We have been comparing DNAs and have found 5 families of Thompsons now who are related back to Kilbirnie, Scotland. We have others who we have yet to connect to another member, but the more of the test results we can gather, the better chance we have of finding matches.
Would you be willing to share your DNA results with us (tomaryfarm@yahoo.com)?

Unfortunately, most members don't include their spouse's last name/birth info!  Even if you are joining the society and opt to join as a single, giving us the spouse info might help people looking like you are.  Hope the rootsweb database helps....  :)

The Clan Thompson database is perfect.  Thank you for all that hard work.  It took me a couple of months to send mine in because I didn't know who to start with.  I  kept changing my mind and then got busy with other things.

Not sure what it would mean but I have Hibbards in my family tree on my Thompson side. Mortimer G. Hibbard and his daughter Telitha Hibbard from Tazewell Illinois are directly related to me through my great grandmother, Orvetta Finks (mother to my grandfather Charles Thompson). That seems pretty distant though.

The list with Hibbard belongs to Carl Lewis Lawson.  His tree shows a Susannah Thompson b. Nov 1803.  She was married to Jesse Gill.  Her father was George Thompson (PA), grandfather George (England) and ggrandfather Thomas.

Hello Dusevoir

I am a bit confused after looking at all the matches you posted from Family Tree. I thought the DNA results were supposed to limit your related links
to the most likely with a genetic distance of three or less.
The numbers in your post seems to indicate someone in you past might have been a bit promiscuous? The good thing ( I think) is that the cavorting was outside the family  ;D
Seriously I haven't a clue regarding  your matches, nor can I think of any way to help your search.
If you can narrow it down somewhat ( dates and locations) maybe we can help.

Well, that Hibbard hint is as good as any. My Thompsons are also possibly from Pennsylvania so it gives me a name to look up. Thanks very much for posting it. Susannah would be about 30 years older than my earliest known Thompson.

Out of curiosity does he know where the Thompsons were in England?

Thanks,

mike

Osborne is a familiar name for me...my grandmother was an Osborne. (And the VA Thompsons)
