Title: Council of Scottish Armigerous Clans & Families
Post by: Allan Thomson on January 05, 2010, 11:57:36 AM
There are many 'Clans' or 'Families' like Thomson who have armigers but no recognised Chief.

I regularly follow the progress of the Clan Duncan Society - simply because the founder, John Duncan of Sketraw is such a regular contributor to the Heraldry Society of Scotland Forum - and I have noted that there has been some developments that might interest the Clan.  See quote below from Clan Duncan Society Forum:

I thought I would post here to inform Clan Duncan Society members about a new body which is currently forming and in which, the Clan Duncan Society is takeing a founding role. The Council of Scottish Armigerous Clans and Families, launched on facebook a few months ago, and is now forming into a more organised body. The Council is being started by a group of armigerous individuals, of so called 'unrecognised clans', who are also involved in running their respective clan societies.

The Council, which will be organised along similar lines to the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs, will comprise of armigers (ie. those entitled to bear a Scottish Coat of Arms),one from each Armigerous Clan or Family. An Armigerous Clan or Family is loosely, a name, with a long connection and history in Scotland, which has at least one member, to whom armorial bearings have been granted or re-matriculated by the Lord Lyon, King of Arms of Scotland. However, for whatever reason the group does not have a Chief and as such, is not an "officially recognised" clan.

The Council will provide representation to its members for the first time in history and will be a welcome addition, to the Scottish Clan scene. A draft Constitution for the new body has been written, which is still work in progress. We are currently opening consultation with a variety of bodies, such as the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs and The Clan Societies of Scottish Armigerous Clans and Families. We are keen to hear the views of everyone with an interest in the Council, before we seek to have the Constitution ratified. A link to the draft constitution is included below.

I look forward to hearing your views,

Kind Regards

I am not sure what power or weight this new organisation carries but it appears to be endorsed by a significant number of Clan Societies.  I think this is perhaps another avenue for the Clan Thom(p)son to consider.  There are already two armigers on this forum and with time and research we may yet unearth more.

Hi Alan -

It certainly sounds like a hopeful channel for our efforts. As we have no chiefly line identified, we have been progressing on the premise of being granted corporate arms as a 'representative body for Thoms worldwide.'  This might be somewhat easier and faster and would, essentially, accomplish the goal which is to have Thom(p)sons recognized again.

Thank you for your efforts - you are finding things none of us have. I am a subscriber to the Heraldry Society of Scotland Forum, but must admit that I haven't had time to read it for months. The Clan Thom(p)son efforts and the society take up a lot of time!

Keep them coming - it's great stuff.

I went over to facebook and checked them out. Looked OK so I even joined the group and left them a note to add Thomson/Thompson to their list of names since we so obviously meet their criteria.
