Probably not that long.  ;D

Not that unusual for small towns in the mountains of Va, W.Va, and Kentucky. After initial settlement, the hollers tended to be self-sustaining for the most part before good roads were built. Before the Interstates, there really were places where "you can't get there from here."

(Not just in America either...I have a tangle of ancestral Thompsons in York that's genealogically hopeless.)
