Birmingham 1812 to Perth 2012

Im Neil Thompson, Im from Perth, Western Australia and Im 50 and I have only just discovered my roots are in Northern England and the Borderlands of Scotland, its so exciting to discover this, but my research is becoming very difficult with William Thompson who I think was born in Warwickshire in 1812, but I dont know who his parents were, so I cant go back any further. His youngest son Sidney William Thompson came to South Australia in 1877 and moved to WA in the 1900s and he died here during the early years of WW2 (1940). So anyway thats part of my story, but Im new to this site so Ill look at some of the other posts and hopefully get to know a few of you, out there in the big wide, world. All the best, Neil

CLAN THOM(P)SON SOCIETY
GENEALOGY POLICY1. Members of Clan Thom(p)son Society are eligible for up to two (2) free hours of genealogist research time from our clan genealogist. Additional services are available at the discounted rate of $25/research hour.
2. Non-members can receive up to 30 minutes of free research time. If they then join the clan, they will be eligible for an additional 2 hours of free research time.
3. The research results (names, data and sources) will be emailed to the requesting individual. All data provided by the requester and any data resulting from her research will belong to Maggie Jones and will be included in her Thom(p)son database.
4. Requesting and/or using Clan Thompson Genealogy Services is authority for inclusion of family history data in the Thom( p)son data base. If you don't have email, mail your data to: Tom Thompson, 1665 Rickman, TN 38580 and he will scan/email it on to Maggie. Only those without email will receive a hard copy of any data found and that would be mailed to you.
It is our intention to marry the Scottish Parrish records with the Scottish Church sessions records (church court records) in the hope of establishing evidence of the Thomson migration from the Borders into the Lothian areas. We are requesting that all Thom(p)sons send us their family pedigree chart, with particular emphasis on your Scottish links. Maggie has extensive Scottish Parish records as well as archived Church sessions records. She plans to use these two sources to document the Thomson migration from the Borders to the Lothians. This documentation will then be sent to Lord Lyon in accordance with his recommendation in his March 2008 letter: "As you are aware, there are a number of hurdles in the way of recognition of Thomson as a name on its own. It would be interesting and helpful if it were possible to point to further references to the family in Lothian and the Borders on the record in the 16th and 17th centuries." In June he wrote "...that the evidence unearthed so far points to several unrelated families situated in different parts of Scotland. It may be the case that there was a concentration of the name in Lothian, the West March and the East March (although there is no evidence that I am aware of that the Lothian and Border families were related)."

Hello Neil and welcome!

I did some quick looking and found the following about your missing links:
William is William Charles Thompson with birth date estimated at 1812.
The 1961 England census lists William as born at Marske, Yorkshire, England, Civil parish Gayles. Wife was Sarah Lowe b. 1811 from one source.
 The England & Wales, Free MBD Marriage Index 1837-1915 Lists:
Sarah H. Lowe m. William Thompson    Oct-Nov-Dec Prestwich, Lancashire, registered 1914. Listed children were Jane 1833, George 1835, Alfred 1841, Emily 1842, Malina 1846, and Sidney Wm 1850.

Sidney was born 02 Nov 1850 in Camden, Middlesex, England and did die in Nedlands, WA, 9 May 1940. Sidney was married to Isabella Margaret Rees in 1871 - she died in 1924.

Sidney arrived in Port Adelaide 11 Jan 1877 on board the "Robert Lees" with his wife and 3 children. Children listed: Jane Ellen, Sidney William, Isabella Margaret, Joseph Hedley, Thomas Henry, Frederic George, Ernest Albert, Lilly May, George Horace and Charles Walter.

I don't know if there was anything new here or not, but thought I would pass it on anyway :)

Hello Mary,

Sorry for the delayed reply, and thank you very much for the information. I do have most of those details already but William still appears to be causing some mystery. I do have the marriage record to Sarah Lowe and we actually have it in Egbaston, but I will check again. Im also still not sure he was William Charles, but I will also follow this up. Thanks! We also now have birth certificates for both Sidney William and Isabella Rees and also their marriage certificate. I recently discovered Sidneys gravesite in Perth, Western Australia. It was quite moving given how far he had come and how many ancestors are now related to him here in Australia. I dont think too many actually know where he lies.

Do you think Maggie Jones may get past the mystery of William? I will write to her soon.
