Title: McLAIN CELTIC FESTIVAL - CARLISLE, PENNSYLVANIA
Post by: Jim Reed, PA Commish on December 15, 2008, 08:42:07 AM
I would be intrested in setting up a Clan Thompson Tent at the McLain Celtic Festival, Carlisle PA on Sept 5, 2009. What support materials are available on loan - Banners, Membership applications, handouts, etc.  Any Thompsons in the South-Central PA region available and will to assist, let me know

That would be GREAT! Maybe we would be able to gather some members together to go......I know there are some on the forum from PA. We do have banners, membership apps, handouts of various kinds, a handbook for a commissioner which includes the basics of running a tent, table covers, tartan pieces, and will (hopefully) have some history put together by then.  Also, you can copy items from the website -- like the arms, etc. and make a notebook for the table.  People seem to like the ones with the plastic page holders that they can flip through.........

Thanks for volunteering!

Mary

Hey y'all,

Please don't forget to take lots of photos!  Remember... Mary has offered to set up a Clan Thompson Society photo gallery to post the photos that are forwarded to her.

Hey Jim! I live in Mechanicsburg and would love to help. My pipe band played there last year and should be playing again next year. I had to stay near the band booth but maybe we can arrange to have them close to each other??? Our band manager knows the organizer very well....I'll have to have him check. :) My mom is local as well and would probably love to help out also.

I kow it's a haul, but it would be great if you all could make it to the AGM in Glasgow, KY this year!  www.glasgowhighlandgames.com

Anything new in your neck of the woods (except cold?)

I would love to be there for those games and was trying to figure out a way to make it work, but its not looking too good. I've got 3 littles ones and the oldest started school this year which adds another layer of complexity. DOH! Keep your fingers crossed.... :)

Cold is an understatement!!! It got back in the 20s and felt like a heat wave! HA!

Are you kidding? There are few garments in existence that are warmer than eight or nine yards of worsted wool gathered round you. I have a friend who won't wear his kilt in the summer anymore because it's just too hot.

Your friend needs to learn how to surreptitiously 'fan' his kilt! It's a quandry --- the heavy weight kilt hangs, holds pleats better and just looks better....but the 13 oz might be cooler. I say "might" because there's only 2 oz per yard (60" wide, 36" long) and that's very little difference for the human body to feel. (with the width of 60", it's almost 2 oz per 1 5/8 yard)

I used to do wool spinning demonstrations in the hot summers wearing a cotton skirt/chemise and bodice. I ROASTED. One day, for some reason, I put on my hand woven, heavy weight, floor length, full wool skirt and wool bodice over a cotton chemise.  I was MUCH cooler..the wool blocked the hot sun beating on it instead of just letting the heat through to my skin. And the wool bodice over the cotton absorbed sweat and worked there too.

So, I'm still a believer in wearing wool in all seasons!

I perfer to go without the kilt or pants in the heat. Thats probably why no one wants to hang around with me in the summer

A note on the kilt in "cold" weather, when I was setting up the Clan Tent at the Orlando games at 6:30am it was 36 degrees Farenheit.  I had on my kilt and wool kilt socks and was comfortable (since I also had on 4 various shirts and a wool vest, the beard and long hair didn't hurt either but those are both gone now...).  I have 13oz wool and will let you know how it does in the Florida Summer...

Great news Jim! I should be able to help out some. My pipe band is playing and then I have to take some shifts at our band tent but I would love to help out in whatever way I can with that said. We are going to try and get the band tent near the clan tents this year. Last year we were tucked in a corner with the other musicians .... something about being loud when we're tuning or  something??? :)

My mom was interested too and planning on helping with whatever. I'll let her know and give her your contact info.

Looking forward to it!!!!
Jon

Great!  You can come over to the tent and entertain the clans a bit!  So often, they stick us off to one side and we don't get much chance to see the pipe bands or watch the pipers play. We'll look for you and your mom!

Wanted to get some info from you re: pipe band uniforms/equipment, too.  :)

Sounds good to me! :)

What do you need to know about uniforms/equipment? I know it adds up quickly!! HAHA!

Doesn't it just! !?!?

I'm trying to decide if it's worth carrying some instruments/uniforms/etc. at our online store or not. I don't know if the pipe bands are thriving and growing or slowly dissolving under the current economic conditions. I believe I can GET just about anything...but whether I want to stock or advertise is what I'm trying to figure out.

One of the major costs for bands (I would think) would be the kilts and THERE, I believe I might be able to help. ;) We'll talk at Carlisle or offline (I don't use the forum for advertising....)

I just don't get to enough games to ascertain the 'health' of Scottish bands.

Thanks!

Mary

understood! We'll gab later. :) Band health seems to vary greatly by band. Our band has actually grown quite a bit this past year but I know others that have seen the opposite.

One couldn't have asked for a better day.  A nice sized crowd, about the size of Edinboro. A great variety of amateur athletic games, Celtic entertainment, clan societies and vendors.  Clan Thompson was represented by Jim Reed and Jon Heller.  Jon,a piper in a band at the festival, had to share his time in manning the Pipe Band tent, but was able to spend a good amount of time representing us.  Had at least a half-dozen Thompson's or Thompson descendants stop by to socialize.  Many who have been to other Games or followed their Thompson heritage, were pleasantly surprised that a Clan Thompson Society existed to represent their interests.  Each walked away with a new member application, so here is hoping we get a few new members.

A big thanks to Jim and Jon
Just getting our name and goals out to the many Thom"s in PA is a great accomplishment.  I know how hard it is to work a tent.
Again thanks guys. The pictures are a real treat.

Hi Jim and Jon -

Sorry I'm so late in congratulating you on a job well done! I was gone for a week, involved with Ern and Cheryl Thompson (Australia) for a week and then adopted a stray dog off the highway and have been incorporating her into the rest of the household for a week. I THINK I finally have my head above water and can get back to my 'normal' life!

Wow - you must have a really good camera! Those pictures are great! And your tent setup looks very professional but welcoming. Good way to use the flags in the back, too!

Sounds like you had a good time and PA is finding out there is a Clan Thom(p)son!!!
