Family traced back to 1600 Kincardineshire
« on: October 09, 2011, 09:47:17 AM »
It seems that in past 400 years my ancestors have moved less than 30 miles.

The earliest ancestor that I have definite dates for is Johne Thomsone who was born in 1637 in Arbuthnott, Kincardineshire. The records of his baptism list his father as Johne Thomsonne although no dates or place of birth are known.

The Mearns seems to be a hotbed of Thomsons.

I certainly don't seem to be of any border reiver heritage.

Well, Scott......as you are well aware, the borders isn't the only area for Thom(p)sons! When we started researching, Lord Lyon said to look at Edinburgh (West Lothian and Lothian) because there was such a glut of them there. We have done some research there, but the fact that most of our members who have done their DNA link back to the border region plus the Acts of the Scottish Parliament documents have concentrated our efforts there.

Good to see you online again!

My relatives came from East Ayrshire, right above the the West March.  But don't know yet if they migrated from the borders.  I can only go back into the 1800's in Scotland, though.  1600's is pretty cool!
