Title: DID YOU KNOW?
Post by: Ernest Thompson on July 03, 2008, 05:38:41 PM
That more than 19 million Americans are of Scottish descent.
Texas alone has more Scots than Scotland, while the whole of
the US has more pipe bands than Scotland.

I did not know that but it really doesn't surprise me. In my neck of the woods (Maine and New England) it was not unusual for a family to have ten or twelve children or more and we Thompsons at least are a hardy stock and a goodly number survived to adulthood and raised equally large families. It may have had something to do with the long cold winters up here.

Stirling,
Must be all those cold nights you suffer in that part of the world.
My Missus thinks it's freezing if the temp drops below 14C.

Here's another one for my Northern cousins.

DID YOU KNOW?
That the Eleventh President of the United States - James Knox Polk
 - one of the least well known Presidents - Grandfather had emigrated
from Blantyre, in Lanarkshire in the eighteenth Century.

Hi Ern, good to see you posting your 'Did You Know? again!  I did not know that about James Polk's grandfather.  Thanks for the education!  :D
