Title: What would a good Scotsman take to a picnic?
Post by: Donna on July 18, 2010, 11:11:55 PM
Hey Y'all,

I know that some of you might think this is a line leading to a dirty joke
but I really need to know about Scottish Picnic food!

Can anyone give me a recipe for picnic food that would reflect the Scottish heritage?   And please don't ask me to slaughter my goat!    :-\

Hey Barb & Mary,

Thanks for the information and I'm sure I'll find something that (with my limited cooking skills) I can fix for the picnic.  And, before it slips my mind...Welcome to the
Forum and the Society Barb!

Your help is much appreciated   :D

My Mom and Grandmother made super great shortbread, used tons of butter

My mom was born in Glasgow in 1902 they came to NJ in 1910
My grandmother still sounded like she just got off the boat until she passed away in 1974 at 92

How about some Kippers.
My mom always said her dad insisted that she should eat Kippers, It was her thing as she refused to eat them.

My Dad used to make breakfast with Kippered Herring and eggs. I asked him how he ever came up with such a weird combination.  My grandfather used to serve it for breakfast.  My grandfather was immigrated from Fenwick Scotland via Glasgow at age 3. So I am guessing that he was served the same by my great-grandfather.   BTW- why does shortbread taste so good with single malt scotch?   ;D Man! I have to go on a week-long low carb diet after a couple of those.  ::)

Here I sit, enjoying a nice dram of Glenlivet and thinking, "What DOESN'T taste good with single malt scotch?" That includes my homemade shortbread, along with chocolate chip cookies, a suggestion I got from a book on how to enjoy good whisky.

If one visits their website you will find the the official name is
"The Glenlivet" to distinguish from others made in the Glenlivet region.

Well said, gentlemen. Selonche Ayre! (my gaelic spelling sucks, I know.) And JTH is spot on.  They made a big deal of it when I visited THE Glenlivit distillery in Scotland- a looong time ago.

I know most people don't read labels, but all bottles and boxes are marked
The Glenlivet
It is great stuff!
I keep it in stock for me and special friends.

Ugh .......and to CROW about peaty! Ugh, ugh! I must be a more civilized Scot (or else, the Welsh part is coming to the forefront?)

I must admit, I do love a good peaty whisky. That smoky flavor is not to be matched anywhere. But I also love the light airiness of a good Highland malt, or the sharp bite of a Lowland. Islay, Speyside, they all have their good points. Took me some education to learn to appreciate them properly.

But if you're all that Welsh (and I have the Welsh blood in me too), then you might appreciate Penderyn (http://www.welsh-whisky.co.uk/) even more. At one of the Colorado festivals, the Welsh Society had some to share and it was quite nice.

You can lead me by the hand (at least on the way back????) to the WELSH tent and I'll try a bit....... :)

Sherry,
BTW our daughter finally sold their house north of Marshall three weeks ago, they closed last Tuesday on a new "to them" house in Haw Creek neighborhood in Asheville. Its only 4 miles from the law office where she works, 8 minutes to day care. Walk to park, library etc. also about 4 miles from Mall.
Garrett is a code enforcement inspector for the city of Asheville.
They decided it was better to take less money and move to Asheville for many reasons, too many lost work snow days last two years, cost of commute and the big one:
Kadence will be 5 in July and Kate wanted her to go to Asheville schools.
She had experience with Madison County schools with her step son.
So no more trips for us to Madison County.

Hey John,
Haw Creek is a nice area. They should like it there. Ahhh to be so close to work and school.......particularly since gas is so high. I filled my tank and was appalled...$40! Thanks to the powers that be, I drive a Honda Civic. Still... $40....mutter, mutter.....

If you have a hankering to visit Madison County give me a ring and we will roll out the Welcome mat for ya! ;D

Cheers,
Sherry
