Games & Festivals / Closing of the Quechee Games
« Last post by Stirling Thompson on June 12, 2016, 09:15:07 AM »
Sad news! After 43 years the Quechee Highland Games and Festival in Quechee, VT is shutting down. Although managed by the St. Andrews Society of Vermont the games were primarily sponsored by a local company called Scotland by the Yard. That company is closing this September and the games along with it. I had done the Quechee Games the last several years and it has always been one of my favorites in the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont and I will miss them. They were always a lot of fun with great participation by clans and visitors. Hopefully the St. Andrews Society of Vermont will find new sponsors and this closing will be only temporary.

Games & Festivals / New England area games for 2016
« Last post by Stirling Thompson on June 05, 2016, 08:47:29 AM »
I sent out the registration forms for Glasgow Lands and Maine on Saturday and those games will be on Saturday July 16, 2016 at Look Park in Florence, MA and at the Topsham Fairgrounds in Topsham, ME on Saturday August 20, 2016. The Vermont games will be on Saturday August 27, 2016 at the Quechee Polo Grounds in Quechee, VT (no registration just cost of admission).

The biggie this year is the New Hampshire Highland Games and Festival at Loon Mountain Resort in Lincoln, NH from Friday September 16, 2016 through Sunday September 18, 2016, This will be our first time there and is the site of our 2016 AGM. I look forward to meeting lots of the folks i have only known through posts on this forum. If you want to attend you need to book lodgings soon as the area motels/hotels fill up well in advance of the games weekend.

Finally, the last games of the New England season will be held at the Edward Waldo Homestead in Scotland, CT on Sunday October 9, 2016.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate for all the games this year and we'll have good turnouts at all venues and I know a wonderful time will be had by all. See you there!

Heraldry / Actual meaning of the new Clan Crest symbols?
« Last post by Parker Thomson on May 22, 2016, 01:31:15 PM »
Some symbols are self explanatory.  The horse and rider at the top represent Reiver Culture.  The helmet probably represents willingness to take up arms.  When you get to the shield on the bottom, what would the celtic weave in blue represent.  The color of the weave sends to imply the dress blue tartan predominant color. The cross- other than general Christian affiliation, what about the type of cross - would it  represent some aspect or theological perspective of Christianity?  The stag's head - the only thing I can think about is the continuity between the new 2012 armiger and the overwhelmingly predominant use of the stag's head in past Thomson armigers.  Surely our present day Lord Lyon must have had some ideas about what should go in the newest Thomson armiger?  Anyone that had contact with him like Tom or Mary Thompson might have an idea?  Thanks.

Games & Festivals / 18th Annual Rhode Island Hihgland Festival
« Last post by Stirling Thompson on May 20, 2016, 09:33:29 AM »
The 18th annual Rhode Island games are on Saturday June 11, 2016 at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Richmond, RI. Normally these would be my first games of the season but unfortunately I will miss them this year due to my grandaughter Leah's high school graduation party which is being held the same day at my home. So my first games will be the Glasgow Lands Festival in July.
