Lachlan Thomson 1868
« on: June 02, 2008, 11:58:32 AM »
My Thomson lineage
When the Thomson male of my generation passes there will be no more "Thomson" named desendents
My Mom must have considered that when she gave me my middle name of Thomson, I know I did because by the time my son was born my cousin William only had a girl, therefore I passed  the Thomson middle name to my son.

Hello John,

Well, I did take a peak at Ancestry.com last night and, unfortunately, can't find a match.  I did find a Lachlan and Elizabeth but he was a boiler maker. Darn!  I don't think Cathy has had time to check it out, and I intend to look in some other places - you're not ignored!

My husband is in the same situation with his mother's family name. He carries it as a middle name. Our kids didn't get it and his brother didn't give the name to his son either......so this branch of Menefee dies out with Tom.

Maybe some of those who lurk but don't join will see a connection with your family tree and join to make contact - it's happened before!

Mary

John:

I did find a couple of wills in  www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

There is a fee, but I have found many of these wills to be very helpful.  I started looking at some of the less common names, and am seeing that Jane Reid who marrried William Dalgarno is listed below....it seems like the right time and place.  It will cost you about $10, but could be worth it!

Cathy
Thank you
So sorry not to reply  earlier, but have been busy we sold our home for the past 25 years and rented temporarily until we found a new home.
We finally found one and now waiting for closing. It was so hard because in SW Florida so many homes are in foreclosure and we got tired of trying to deal with banks, finally found one at right price and not in foreclosure.
I am in NJ on business and had some time so I checked the clan board.
John

As I mentioned in my last post we had found a new home. We are now settled in the new home.
We are in the same county but now in "town" as opposed to previous 25 years in country on 2.5 acres 25 miles from town.
We recently been attending a nearby Episcopal church (Nearest Presbyterian church 30 miles east or west of us)
They celebrated St Andrew's Day this past Sunday. The vicar's mother is Scottish.
He wore his kilt under his vestments, had a bagpiper play and read the the scripture in both English and Gaelic.
He blessed the Tartans of the people who brought their family's tartan.
I had brought my Thomson tartan tie.
What a place to live.

Hey John,
It does sound like you found a wonderful place to live!  Do you live anywhere near Duke?   Don't forget the Gathering on January 17th in Central Florida!

Looked again last night but found the same info Cathy already had.  Wish folks would post new geneo info!

Dead ends are bummers, for sure.........but I keep thinking about how cool it is that with all the Thompsons out there, Tom and Booner have the closest DHA match available (I think it's common ancestor in 5 generations or something). Two members of the society! I knew they were alike politically....wonder if it's genetic?   ::)

Genetic, very possibly, but it's also true that we are two men very intelligent men, so we should think alike.

Humble too. Did I mention that?  We're both very humble.

Your humble servent,
Booner

I can't get my cousin to submit DNA, he is the last male Thomson in our Thomson line.
My DNA still has not come close in the Hollingsworth testing, and the female side is iffy on the Thomson search.
Well some day.
I am back to 1820+- on both lines

You didn't say why your cousin wouldn't do a DNA test.  My sister and I shared the DNA cost, perhaps if you could work out some sort of cost sharing he might be more willing to do the test. Just a thought.

Its not a money issue.
I even have trouble trying to get him to update family data for his part of the Thomson family.
He is in NJ , I'm in Florida but his sister in Texas has updated her part of family information.
I had only 2 first cousins on the Thomson side.

On the Hollingsworth side I had 5 first cousins of which 3 all passed away in their early fifties (I guess bad genes in their Mother's Family)

The 3 of us left, finally talked and visited in 2007 for the first time in over 40 years. (its a long story)
My 2 cousins are in their 80's and still live in NJ I'm the young one at 68
