Hello all!
« on: August 15, 2010, 09:46:01 PM »
Hello fellow Thom(p)sons!

My name is Marc Thomson. I'm a descendant of John Thomson b. ~1685 in West Lothian, Scotland. I was researching the Thomson name and its origins in an effort to aid my genealogical research and I ended up here. Actually, I found a debate on the existence of a Thomson clan, and that let me here.

I'm very pleased to see so many people who are as excited about the Thomson name and clan status as I am. My 3rd great grandfather, William Thomson and wife Amelia Ann Despain, immigrated to the USA in the late 1800's. The information we have from them regarding our family history is sparse at best.

Anyway, nice to meet you all. I've been lurking in the forums and now have the opportunity to contribute.

Welcome Indeed!

Marc, it is good to hear from you. Although my firdt name is George, I maionly go by Steve Thompson.

I am retired and now live in the SC Area. (Wonderful Beaches)
I am from WV (Wood CO) and the family (in the states) is from the Wythe Co Area of Virginia.
We originated in Scotland and I can trace all the way back to James Thom(p)son (abt 1350)
Dunbartonshire, Scotland.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have about the Thom(p)son line.

My files show that Ann Despain was married to George (son of William) about 1852.
As files can be wrong, please advise if mine are correct ?

The list for George goes back top John abt 1717. West Lothian Scotland,

-Steve

Marc welcome to the madhouse... er... forum! Feel free to jump right in!

Hey! Did anyone notice we've passed the 150 mark in membership on the forum? Sure would be nice if some of them were a bit more active.  ???

Wow! That's significantly farther than I have gone in my research.

I certainly plan on doing just that.

That's about as far as I've gotten. I have a family contact who claims to have found John Thomson's (b. 1717) father, John (b. 1685) in West Lothian, Scotland. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to verify the records yet, and the line again seems to end there. Someday, when I'm rich and notorious, I plan on visiting the area to see if I can find something a little more substantial.

Thanks for the welcome. I plan on participating as often as I can. Between my many hobbies and interests, that might not be as often as I would like. Don't hold that against me though.  8)

I don't know how far anyone can go back into history, but I can go back to 1628.
I will soon post my family line with all the names, dates and places that I have.
Hopefully it will help some others in their search.
