New Guy from Georgia
« on: March 29, 2014, 03:09:32 PM »
Hello Clan Thompson! Just received forum access today and am looking forward to learning more about the Thompson family.

My paternal grand mother was a Thompson and was the first generation on her family born here in the States. So far I have been able to trace back a further 4 generations back to about 1760's in East and North Yorkshire.

It was a surprise when I found this site and really started researching the family name and discovering that it originated from the border areas of Scotland. I am hoping to find out more about my family line and so far this site has been the most helpful. I look forward to chatting with everyone and am excited about having an opportunity to share in the discovery processes.

Cheers!

Hi Ron and welcome to the family! I'm with Ern and Cheryl -- tell us your story :)

If you want some help with your genealogy, can you provide the names and some dates ( birth or marriage or death) of the last ancestors you found (the ones from the 1760s in Yorkshire).  I'd be happy to have a look and see if I can spot any connections for you.  I had some great luck with Martin Oman's ancestry a few days ago - came up with 3 additional generations. Now, if I could just find OURS!

If you can post some info, other members might recognize someone in their family line also -- you never know.

Don't be shy with questions or comments - we need some new life in the old forum!

Well, I am 33 years old and am a southern boy from Georgia.  Actually, I was born in Washington DC when my father was still in the Army, but he was stationed to Ft. Stewart, Georgia, which is about 35 miles southwest of Savannah, and we have never left.  After graduating from high school there in 1998, I enlisted in the Marine Corps as a saxophonist.  After a year of training, which included boot camp, combat training, and 6 months at the Armed Forced School of Music in Virginia Beach, I spent 3 years back at Parris Island, SC with the Marine Band stationed there from 1999 to Sept. 2002.  After leaving the Marines, I moved to Savannah and spent 5 years working for Best Buy as a sales and service supervisor and manager.  My last 2 years were spent spinning up the Geek Squad when they first arrived at Best Buy and also working in the field, driving the little Beetle and doing house calls.

In 2007, I had an opportunity to try for a job with General Dynamics IT as a destkop service tech for the Simulation Center on Ft. Stewart.  I have been there ever since and in 2009 I moved into working as a Systems Engineer for the simulation systems, as well as the main tech involved with the integration of our simulation systems with the Army's tactical systems for training purposes.  I love the job and love working with computers, and since the job is Monday through Friday, I get to continue my passion for playing music as well.  Last June, my fiance (who happens to be a Dunn, who's family originated in County Donegal, Ireland; yes she is a red head!) and I bought a house on Saint Simon's Island, GA and absolutely love it down here!  We had been living the past 4 years in the historic district of downtown Savannah.  It was great, but it wore out its fun after that amount of time.

My last name is German/Polish and the spelling now is different than it used to be.  My mother's family is also German, from the Sudetanland region of the now Czech Republic, specifically Karlovy Vary.  Unfortunately, I have not been able to trace back much of her family or the Yatzek family for that matter, for reasons I believe to be related to missing info caused possibly by WWII.  Her family lost a few members not only through what Hitler did annexing that area, but also fleeing the Russians at the end of the war to get across the border into Germany.  Thank goodness there were American troops where they crossed on the border that decided to let her family through.  My paternal grandmother, Nellie J. Thompson, is the only line I have been able to trace back with any substantial information.  She was the first generation born in the states, in Hutchinson, Kansas.  Below is the family line I have been able to trace so far.

Nellie J. Thompson - b. 19 Apr. 1893 Hutchinson, Kansas d. Southfield, Michigan 13 May 1966
-- George A. Thompson - b. 8 Dec. 1862 Yedingham, Yorkshire, England d. Detroit, Michigan 15 Jan. 1919
-- -- Charles Thompson - b. 1830-1831 Haslerton, North Riding, Yorkshire, England d. 24 Aug. 1912 Ecorse, Michigan
-- -- -- William Thompson - b. 7 Jun. 1778 Burghwallis, Yorkshire, England d. 1856 (?) Yedingham, Yorkshire, England (?)

Now, here is where my research dries up.  The only info I could find on William was that he is apparently the illegitimate son of an Ann Thompson from Burghwallis, on who I have absolutely no information I can find.  She is my wall so to speak...lol.

Well, there is just about everything about me in as short of a story as I can make it!  For the music lovers out there, below are links to my SoundCloud profile.  I have recording on there from my blues band in Savannah, called Bottles N' Cans, two songs from a band formed by some friends that wanted me to play on their debut CD, and my current solo project going back into my real passion, Classic Jazz standards.

Oh, and some funny happenings that show just how small our world really is; a couple that we met in Savannah, who are now our closest friends, is really the one who got me to search the Thompson name out for Scottish origins.  The irony of our relationship and the way we interact is that he is a member of Clan Bell directly and he had known from his clan's own history the Thom(p)son name.  He was not aware of the Curse though or the hell that the Thompson and Bell clans caused during the reiver times.  We found it pretty humorous that we would all find each other and become such great friends.

I want to thank you all for the warm welcome, and I look forward to sharing in the research of the family! Thanks again!

Welcome Ron! It really is a small world. My name is Stirling (with an i) and I was in the Corps and went through PI in 1966 then worked for the US Army as a computer specialist for 22 years and my Thompson claim is also through an illegitimate child. I don't play an instrument but I did sing semi-professionally and my late cousin Les Richards played in the Air Force band at Colorado Springs and taught music at Orono, Maine.

Yes, very small world indeed...lol.  I have only met two other people with our first name, and you are the second!  Much respect for going through PI when you did, my experience was a cakewalk in my time comparably...lol. Semper Fi brother. /cheers.

Hi Ron!

I've been doing a little digging here & there on your names and dates. From what I can tell, it seems Burghwallis is referred to as Doncaster. Do you find this to be true? I have found some things mentioning a William Thompson with mother Anne Thompson also linked to a Charles & George Thompson but the dates I have for birth year are 1787. If you like, I will post the links to them on here.

Sure feel free to post it here.  I do see that the Burghwallis records are all housed in Doncaster.  Seems that this is the main town surrounded by the smaller villages.  I still have only been able to find a birth date of 7 Jun 1778 and a Baptism date of 10 Jul 1778 for William.  I wonder if I maybe took a wrong turn one generation back...lol.

And thanks for the comments about "Star Fell on Alabama."  It is one of my favorite jazz standards and that was a later recording.  It was a learning experience doing self recording and took me a while to get a somewhat decent sound from the room...lol.

And thanks again all for the warmest welcome.  Makes me very happy I decided to look here!

Ron....see if any of these help
You might've already seen them.....

It does list his baptism under Non-Conformist (non parish) records. Searching the quaker's records seems to be the place to look for that. I've been looking for a while now but must get some sleep. I will continue tomorrow.I did look there the other day and found a few things of interest but like a dummy I forgot to save it and now I'm having trouble finding it again. UGH.  If you want to do a little digging yourself on there its here  (somewhere lol) :

Cheryll I very much appreciate all the help.  Seems that this is the only information available for William and his mother Ann.  I found exactly the same baptism records with the same info.  It does list Ann's occupation as Servant, so I am thinking it is quite possible there is no info out there for her beyond this one record.

I did however find a possible, and I stress possible, wife of William, by the name of Jane Cordiner born in 1802.  I am trying to contact the owner of the tree by email to find out where he gathered his information since he has their children listed correctly, but I have not yet been able to trace any documents.

I did find an interesting listing in a parish record from the North Riding or Yorkshire that actually showed a shift in the spelling of the surname. I will have to track it down again, but it was a birth record showing the father as Thomson and the son as Thompson, from I think around the end of the 1600's.  I found it pretty interesting.

I think I am coming to the conclusion that there are just so many Thompsons in Yorkshire County, that I might never be able to for sure trace back any farther.  It has blown my mind how many I have found going through old documents over the last week or so.

Thanks again for the help and I will continue the search!...lol.
