Roy Rogers' real name was Leonard Franklin Slye.

The only other Sly that I heard of was William Sly a friend of William Shakespeare the famous English Playwright.

So the chances of finding any info on the Sly(e) family Are slim to none, unless
one of them chooses to step forward. Sorta like looking for Dan'l Boones powder
horn or rifle.

Hello Graham;
Maybe I found some thing that will help you. On yahoo or google, search for
Sly family history, and you will find several sites for the family info. Not Sly and
the family stone though,(they's Stewarts).....
As I said, there aren't many of them. Two in Scotland,30+ in California. Good luck.

Graham,

Here is a whole collection of Rootsweb resources about the name Sly.
http://resources.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~clusters/surnames/s/l/SLY/

Ancestry.com has this tidbit:
Quote
Sly Name Meaning and History
English (chiefly West Midlands): nickname for a cunning or crafty individual, from Middle English sligh ‘sly’ (earlier slegh, from Old Norse sl?gr).

Also, lots more information and a message board at
http://www.ancestry.com/facts/Sly-family-history.ashx

Another web site says they were Lords of the manor at Ashe in Derbyshire in ancient times.

Hope that helps.
