Sr. Samuel Thomson's Ointment (Grandpa's Salve) as perfected by Dr. Samuel Thomson, has been somewhat of a family tradition and has been handed down through the succeeding generations of the Thomson family. The receipe is as follows:
Place 1 1/2 pounds of lard in pan
   Add 3/4 pound rosin
   Add 1/2 pound beeswax
Add 1 oz oil of spike (?)
simmer until all is melted. Set back to cool and the salve is ready to use.

In reading the "recipe" that was handed down....I noticed .....oil of spike....

In painting (oil based paints is all I'm familiar with) we used to use lavender oil because the turpentine smelled so strong in close quarters AND it was supposed to not evaporate as fast as turpentine. I remember a teacher calling it spike oil....or something like that.

Tom, what a coincidence! I live in Linwood, MA which is a village within the town of Northbridge. That being said, since my family originated in mid-coast Maine I doubt there is a close family connection.
