Sir Roy Thomson of Fleet

You asked yesterday about Sir Roy Thomson of Fleet.  I forgot that his blazon could be found in the book An Ordinary of Arms Volume II 1902 - 1973 which I have on the shelf.

I imagine the Lord Lyon decided to use a Moose head rather than the usual [Thom(p)son] Stags head to reflect that he was Canadian.

With the usual warnings about potential errors - Wikipedia has some interesting text on Sir Roy Thomson of Fleet concerning his Scottish roots:

--- Quote ---Thomson’s ancestors were small tenant farmers on the estates of the Dukes of Buccleuch at Bo'ness, in the parish of Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Thomson's ancestor, Archibald Thomson (born May 1749), migrated to British North America in 1773, marrying Elizabeth McKay, of Quebec. The family eventually settled in Upper Canada, but retained a sentimental attachment to their country of origin. As a result, Thomson himself made the decision to move to Edinburgh where in 1952 he purchased The Scotsman newspaper.

While the original 1958 grant of arms featured a Moose head, Rt Hon Roy Herbert THOMSON, Baron THOMSON of Fleet later registered a new coat of arms in 1965:


--- Quote ---Argent a stag's head cabossed proper on a chief Azure between two mullets a hunting horn of the first stringed Gules.

This information needs corroborated but appears to show the moose head now changed the more common stags head.  See picture below:

Regarding the moose head on Rt Hon Roy Herbert Thomson's arms

Remaining Thomson arms in the Lyon Office Ordinary, vol.II. The first coat of Roy Herbert Thomson have been omitted since, on becoming Lord Thomson of Fleet, he changed the original moose-head in his arms to the usual Thomson stag's head. And Forum Mgr says that with the latest update to the Simple Machines Forum, it started putting in two sets of http:// http:// when you try to put a hot hyperlink in a post.
