Hello Everyone! My name is James Edward Thompson, Jr. but I go by "Duke". I have been watching the forum and site for some time now and realized this is something I really want to, and should, be part of. I live in central Florida with my wife Alison and son Taylor. I usually attend the Highland Games in Winter Springs, FL in January and will try to make the Jacksonville, FL festival in February this year, wife and weather permitting. I have learned much already and hope to do and learn much more as this society/clan/family continues to take shape and make itself known.
Glad to be here!

Welcome Duke!
I believe we have a few members in Florida. Hopefully, they will chime in and introduce themselves to you. Maybe you can meet up at some of those gatherings.
Cheers!

Welcome Duke, so glad to have you here. Named after Kings you were...James and Edward. ;D James Edward Thompson, that's a fine name. Glad you've found your home, don't be shy, you can talk to any one on this forum and any questions will be answered by whoever knows the answer. Looking forward to your posts. :D

G'day and wellcome Duke,
I had the pleasure of touring your state back in 2000 and totally enjoyed myself.
Hope you do the same here.

Hey Duke,
It's a pleasure to welcome you and your family! I hope some of the other "guests" who have been visiting the forum will take your lead and jump right in!
Donna

And welcome from us, too!
Glad you've decided to put your oar in the water with the rest of us....... the water's fine here! Since you've been on the website for awhile, you know we do everything from the 'sublime to the ridiculous', but we've found a lot of information on our TRUE roots and clan and, hopefully, as new people join us and bring their information to the group, we'll learn more. Don't forget to send your genealogy information to Cathy!
Welcome to the gang!

Hey Duke,
Did you read my post offering a lovely "Thank You Gift" to anyone who has been visiting the forum for a bit and now decides to become a paid member?
Well, I'm doing a little happy dance...you are the very first person to take me up on my offer! Please contact me at donnaraye@sbcglobal.net to supply your mailing information and I'll run right down to the post office with your little gift.

Please...if you have been visiting our Forum for a bit and now decide to become a paid member, don't forget to mention this in your introduction so I'll know to start the music for another little happy dance and send you a sweet little "Thank You" item.
Donna

Do we also get a "thank you" gift if were renewing?
-
I'm sorry Graham, this is a effort to bring in some new folks. Hey, don't forget...if you bring in a NEW member you would get a "Thank You" item.
Do you have Thom(p)son cousins! It's time to call them up and tell them
all about us!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!!! Michael, thanks for breaking the ice and jumping in first - much appreciated. Barbara, I tend to run but I hope my posts are at least entertaining. Named after kings and going by Duke - I'm much more laid back these days than the names imply. Ern, you must like HOT or you were in FL during one of the two cool weeks - glad you enjoyed it. Donna, enjoy your happy dance and I will follow up. Mary, just show me which bench and oar are mine. Old divorce will make the family history a bit touchy at first but it will work out and I'll keep Cathy posted. Graham, just tell Donna we are cousins and perhaps she'll reconsider. Thanks for the warm welcome again...

Hello MACTAVISH,
I wet a line wherever I go! This weekend I will be standing in the surf at New Smyrna Beach just south of Daytona chunking shrimp for whiting, maybe a small shark or catfish or permit. I also bass fish and fly fish. If I am around fish I try to catch them.

Hi Duke,
First, welcome to Clan Thompson. On the Welcome page of this website, we welcome all Scots and those who wish they were Scots!
So, your mission (should you accept) is to pass the word in your area of Florida that Clan Thompson is here. ;D
Second, I truly love the New Smyrna Beach, so open, quiet and so uncommercialized. We were down there a few years back and had the best time. Hope you have a really good fishing trip.
Again, Duke, Welcome.

All I want to do in Florida is go to DISNEYWORLD!!!! I'm OLD and I've still never made it to Disney World!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
Maybe I should go down and rent a little boat.......then I could show Duke to his bench and oar! ;D Love your sense of humor, Duke! And be careful how much of what Michael says you believe! He's been known to spin a yarn or two!

Welcome aboard Duke! Sorry it's taken me so long to say hello but this is a crazy time of year for me. You'll find a whole bunch of great folks and good friends here so don't be afraid to step into the fray!
-
Paula, let me know if you guys are heading to New Smyrna- the family and I go often - listening to the waves as I type this, too dark to really see them. Mary, come to Disney - in 2009 they let you in free on your birthday. Stirling, thanks for the welcome!!!

Hello All,
A bit of a breakthrough tonight, may sound a little silly to those who have an extensive Thom(p)son family tree already, but there was a pretty sudden and thorough divorce in my family, so I just found out that my paternal grandfather was Hassell Thompson 1922-1948 who died young of encephalitis. I believe he was born in PA. He had two children, James Edward (my father) and Nancy Thompson (my Aunt). I have family trees down from Hassell Thompson including half sisters (my half-aunts?) from the widowed wife's (Thelma Jordon, Thompson, Forrester's) next marriage. Digging further back now looking for birth records, may have to skip the gym in the morning so I can keep going online for a while. I really just found this out and confirmed it with signatures in my baby book. Am pretty excited and felt like posting... Any information on Hassell Thompson's parent's would be appreciated. I'll keep updating here if I find anything to add...

Good luck with the searching Duke, the gym can wait!

Boy, that's the truth! I've been connected to Ancestry for the past 6 hours and I can just feel my butt growing into this chair. I'm tired and hungry but I'm finding so many clues today that I cant make myself log off! There are too many Thompson-McClanahan-Snodgrass-Moore-Strickland bodies to dig up.

Just filling in what I knew already took hours with little trips around the web to chase hints. A few more added today after a phone call to my Mom and a trip through one family bible. About to call a great Aunt for input on another side of the family. Lucked out a couple generations back, a distant in-law had posted a tree earlier so I chased that for two more easy generations and have hints waiting. Still stuck on Hassell Thompson, unsure of place of death and full legal name and not finding a marriage certificate yet (he was the first of multiple husbands). I know he was from Pennsylvania and PA doesn't have nice, easy, online records. Having fun though!

Donna, my husband is a Moore. His family moved to West TN by way of VA. They took a trip to California for a couple of years where his father was born (in Orange Co.) Then moved back here. There are a lot of Moores!!!
Barbara

Hey Barbara,
My Moore's are from Floyd Co. Virginia, then moved west to Missouri and Kansas. Its said that this Moore line started with John Moore and his son David in Scotland.

Hello everyone, I'm back!!! The Jacksonville FL games in February were slow traffic wise, but worth the trip and I will relate an interesting story on that thread soon. I have some pictures that will get posted eventually! Wanted to say a quick hello to break the ice again and hope everyone has been well. I missed the Dunnedin games, have had an overwhelming few months schedule wise but finally freeing up. Will catch up on posts, reading and writing!!!
-
Glad you're back - no ice to break, we're all still here!
Lots are games are going to be slow this year, I think. I'm surprised at the number being cancelled totally. People are just not able to spend for the fun things by the time they pay for the 'must do' things. Darn! But -we'll do what we can and go where we can and have fun!
-
Okay, back again. Really! Catching up on posts and starting to think about the Florida games again. Glad to see everyone still here and all of the new faces, too many to welcome one-by-one, so welcome all!!! I am planning to have a tent at the Central Florida games in January and I can see doing Jacksonville again just after. Now that Taylor is back in school and Summer is over and evening is coming a little earlier I hope to be more present. Anyone planning to go to Grandfather Mountain?
-
Not us.........out of cash!
I think Fred and Babs plan to be in FL again this winter.....maybe you can snag them for a bit of help?
Glad to see you posting again!
