All you need is the documentation that proves your descent from the people you name as ancestors in your petition, the more generations you go back, obviously the more paperwork you will need. Generally this is just birth and marriage certificates. At the time I went back as far as my great grandfathers, as that was all I really knew. If I was doing it today I could prove back to the late 18th century.
