My Thom(p)son family
« on: January 15, 2008, 05:43:03 PM »
The oldest record I have is printed on the the fly leaf of a bible given to Edward Thompson by his grandfather, Edward Franklin Thomson. On this page is written, "Simella Thomson, Her Bible, 1795." The name Samuel is also written on this page. There were several childeren in this family, but I only have the records of one son, Edward Franklin Thomson, born on 18 Mch, 1794 either on the boat from Ireland to America, or in Ireland just prior to the familiy's immagration. The elderly memeber of my family who gave me these records stated the family was Scotish, but left to escape the "Papist Wars" in Ireland.  I suspect that they may have been Scotish, but had been living in Ireland for some time. Irish catholics were giving the British some problems at this time because Great Britian was entering into war with France and could not garrison Ireland adequatly and the native Irish were fighting with the "Ulster Scots" who had taken there land in the 1600's, (the Irish plantations). No records have been found of the ship which brought the Thomson family to America, presumidly arriving in Philadelphia, PN. It is also not known the relationship of Edward Franklin to Simella, (sibling or mother). At approximatly nine years old, Edward Franklin's parents died of an epidemic. Edward Franklin was raised by a  German family named Patterson, and educated in a german speaking school. Sometime in the 1830's-40's the "P" was added to the last name via census records.
From the 1790's until the 1850's, my Thom(p)son family lived in Montgomery county, in or around Trappe PN.

Hi Big T -

You are so lucky to have found all this information! Unfortunately, none of your ancestors match ours. :(  Sigh. Guess we'll just have to keep slogging along.

I'm sure you are going to match up with someone as more people get involved here!

Thanks so much for posting this for all of us to have a gander. ;D
